Improving and upgrading a vehicle, or, more simply, tuning, can go to the extreme. To the extreme which is associated with danger on the road. And on the road, safety must come first! After all, no appearance can replace lost health, much less life. What we all mean is that when operating a vehicle, it is necessary to comply with the requirements prescribed by traffic rules and other regulatory documents that advocate for our peace of mind. Let's say you put xenon in the headlights that are blinding, or LEDs in the headlights of the wrong color. As a result, from afar in the dark it is not clear whether there is a car there or a Christmas tree. And from here all possible unpleasant consequences follow. In addition, the driver of such a car may also be charged a fine. So, can they issue a fine for dimensions of the wrong color, no matter blue, green, yellow or another color, on what basis and how much!? It is this question that we will answer in our article.
Where does it say that blue (green) lamps cannot be installed in the dimensions?
Let's turn to the basics, to the traffic rules, namely to the document “Traffic rules of the Russian Federation, Basic provisions for the approval of vehicles...”. Here we will be interested in the appendix to this section “List of faults and conditions under which the operation of the vehicle is prohibited.” In section 3, paragraph 3.6 prohibits operation if:
The vehicle is equipped with: at the front - lighting devices with lights of any color except white, yellow or orange, and retroreflective devices of any color except white; |
Here all that remains is to argue about the shades and what is white light and what is something else. But if you want to go to the extreme, then this topic can of course be developed, but we won’t. Actually, from the logical conclusions it becomes clear that blue or green dimensions do not fit into the concept of the List of Malfunctions and Conditions at all... So, if there is a violation, then there is a punishment for it.
Where can I find information about the ban on installing blue or green lights in traffic lights?
Instead of guessing from the tea leaves and listening to idle conversations and stories, let’s turn to the source, where you can find all the answers to the questions that interest any motorist. In general, it is useful to periodically flip through the traffic rules and recall the articles of the law in memory, especially recently, since many points of the law are changing and becoming stricter. This is, of course, connected with safe traffic on the roads, with the establishment of order, because recently the number of vehicles has increased significantly, and drivers themselves sometimes forget how necessary it is to comply with traffic laws and be respectful of themselves and others. So, we are looking for an answer...
It is contained in the main road document, the traffic rules. There are fundamental rules for allowing a car to be used. They are stated in the appendix that is given to the basics, namely the third section of paragraph 3.6 states:
Drivers who want to brighten up their vehicle and improve its appearance can only illuminate the underside with colored lights and highlight the rear registration plate as an addition. Such a constructive installation, in principle, can be allowed, but not in devices with basic functionality.
The mentioned article clearly states the ban on blue light bulbs in the main lighting fixtures and the punishment for such lighting “tricks”.
Fine for having blue (green) lights on a car
Let's look through the booklet of the Code of Administrative Offenses under Chapter 12 and understand that for dimensions of the wrong color, one of the most universal articles will be used, namely 12.5. Here you need to refer to part 3
Driving a vehicle on the front of which are installed lighting devices with red lights or red reflective devices, as well as lighting devices, the color of the lights and the mode of operation of which do not comply with the requirements of the Basic Regulations for the Admission of Vehicles... entails deprivation of the right to drive vehicles. for a period of 6 months to 1 year with confiscation of the specified instruments and devices. |
Yes, it should be noted that the seemingly harmless action of changing the color of the dimensions can be punished so severely. Indeed, deprivation of a driver’s license, that is, a special license, is a rather harsh punishment. It only remains to note that the deprivation of a special right is carried out by a judicial act, that is, such a decision is made by a judge. If we talk about the confiscation of lamps with blue or green light, which is provided for by the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, then the confiscation must take place with 2 witnesses, or with a video recording. A protocol for the seizure of items will be drawn up. Confiscation of items of an administrative violation allows for Article 243 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation. The inspector's decision can be challenged in court.
Penalty for blue light bulbs in 2021
On June 25, 2021, Resolution of the Plenum of the Supreme Court No. 20 was published, which contains the following paragraph in paragraph 6:
At the same time, if only the color or operating mode of the light devices installed on the vehicle does not comply with the above requirements, driving such a vehicle can be qualified under Part 1 of Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.
This article is about installing blue light bulbs. This is due to the fact that cars with this violation can be found on Russian roads from time to time. However, information about this violation has not received wide publicity, unlike, for example, the installation of xenon or LED lamps. Therefore, few drivers who install blue lamps understand what punishment awaits them.
About a couple times a year I get questions about installing blue light bulbs. Most often, the point is that the driver wants to find out how lawfully the punishment was imposed for the wrong color of the lamps in the headlights. So I don’t recommend repeating this mistake. If your vehicle has blue or light blue bulbs, replace them with standard ones as soon as possible.
Note. The above information also applies to lighting devices of other non-standard colors : green, purple, brown. However, such options are much less common.
In addition, I would like to remind you that a driver may have his license revoked for using red lights on the front of the car.

Detention of a vehicle if it has blue (green, yellow) dimensions installed
Also, a motorist may have questions about the possibility of detaining his vehicle if suddenly a traffic police inspector stops the car and charges him with dimensions of the wrong color. In order to answer the question about the possible detention of a vehicle, it is necessary to refer to Article 27.13 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation. And here, when reading the article, it becomes clear that in relation to Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, detention can only be applied for part 2, and we have part 3. That is, they cannot detain a vehicle for blue (green) dimensions. Well, at least something makes me happy!
Communities › DRIVE2 and traffic police › Blog › Yellow, or rather orange, dimensions
Greetings to all. I came across these dimensions in the store today and decided to install them. The light from them is not yellow but bright orange. I kind of like it... but I have my doubts about the traffic cops. Do you think they can get to the bottom of it?

According to the rules, yellow orange and white lights are allowed in front. This is true! BUT! We go to the guest house on 41.48-2004. White is the low beam, high beam, fog lamps and dimensions. Orange are turn signals. The yellow ones are fog lights. And only these colors. As a result, we get all these colors allowed by the rules. And in a guest, these colors are distributed in their places and that’s the only way. But the gays turn a blind eye to this
Good evening! Please tell me, the guys didn’t make brains for the orange clearance?
No never. By the way, after a while they fade a little and become more yellow.
Yes? Thank you, otherwise I installed orange diodes, and they are almost red (saturated orange), so now I’m wondering if it’s dangerous. It looks really beautiful.
If they want to get to the bottom of it, they look good)
According to traffic regulations, you can use white, yellow and orange lights in front of the car. According to GOST R 41.48-2004. The front marker light must be White.
www.drive2.ru/l/5530433/ There is a complete breakdown of these dimensions. I’ve been riding for a couple of weeks myself, I don’t want to switch to diodes, the lamps are more reliable, the BSK works as it should, it doesn’t yell that the lamps are burnt out, it’s original to some extent.
I've been riding these for over a year. They don't burn out. The police don't care =)
According to traffic regulations, this color of lamps is allowed, so you can install them without problems.
I've never been stopped driving with these. and they don't even look in my direction
That's how I ride too. All is good!
in foglights it is possible. I think there will be no questions here.
I drive with such problems and have no problems.
Yes, they seem to be orange, but the rules do not prohibit the use of orange on the front.
I rode with these for a long time and nothing happened, they look awesome!)
I've been driving with these for 3 years now, all cars have PHILLIPS.
install it, everything will be fine, but here’s the problem)) you’re installing the wrong bulbs)) you need to buy those that are entirely orange, the glass there comes without paint. And they don’t fade...www.drive2.ru/l/5550213/
I made “American dimensions” for myself and thought about “legality”... opened the Administrative Code... we find article 12.4... it says: “clause 1. Installation on the front of the vehicle of light devices with red lights or red reflective devices, as well as light devices, the color of the lights and the operating mode of which do not comply with the requirements of the Basic Provisions for the admission of vehicles to operation and the duties of officials to ensure road safety”...
This paragraph refers us to the “Basic provisions for the approval of a vehicle...”... open it, read... read... read... we get to the “Appendix to the Basic provisions for the approval of a vehicle...” find the paragraph: “3.6. The vehicle is equipped with: at the front - lighting devices with lights of any color except white, yellow or orange, and retroreflective devices of any color except white; at the rear - reverse lights and state registration plate lights with lights of any color other than white, and other lighting devices with lights of any color other than red, yellow or orange, as well as reflective devices of any color other than red.”
That's it... according to the law, everything is legal... but in fact... each region has its own vision of the law! =)
1000 rubles seems to be a fine for this.
I ride with these and have no problems with the gears. Every month I change them, the paint fades and they begin to shine with a pale color... Don’t install diodes like that, they won’t have the same effect, they produce an orange dot.
The current state of affairs with dimensions of the wrong color (blue, green, etc.)
Actually, most motorists already know that experimenting with the “wrong” light in dimensions is not worth it. And those lamps of blue, green and other colors that are sold in auto parts stores are mainly intended for interior lighting and instrument lighting. That is, in reality we quite rarely encounter such an offense. As for shades of white, that is, when there were incandescent lamps and LEDs were inserted into the dimensions, then usually such a replacement takes place without consequences, that is, no one finds fault with the fact that a lamp with a different spectrum is installed in the socket, which is provided according to the manufacturer’s documentation TS. However, this cannot be said about xenon and LEDs, when such light sources are used in headlights for high and low beam.
Is it possible to install blue lamps in car headlights?
The traffic rules themselves, of course, do not set restrictions for tuning lighting devices. However, this document contains clause 2.3.1, obliging drivers to ensure that the car is in good technical condition before starting the trip. That is, various restrictions must be looked for in the List of Malfunctions, in which an entire section is devoted to external lighting devices.
The color of car lighting devices is regulated by clause 3.6:
Light fixture type | Acceptable colors |
Headlights | White to orange |
Front reflective elements | Only white |
Reversing lights | Only white |
Registration number lighting | Only white |
Brake lights and tail lights | Only red |
Rear reflective elements | Only red |
In dimensions
Despite the fact that side lights are not turned on while driving on the roads, the blue color in them is also prohibited. The dimensions refer to the front light devices, so the light color ranges from white to orange.
Previously, the color of the dimensions was completely limited to white - this was enshrined in GOST 51709-2001. However, at the moment this document has lost legal force, so you only need to rely on the List of Malfunctions.
In low beam, high beam or fog lights
Any headlights located on the front of the vehicle must also comply with legal requirements. Neither fog lights, nor low beams, nor high beams should shine blue. Only white, yellow and orange are allowed. Some white light bulbs may have a bluish tint from the factory - you cannot get a fine for this. But the closer the color is to blue, the more attention the car will attract from traffic police officers.
In the backlight of the license plate
It would seem that the blue illumination of license plates would not hurt anyone on the road, but the law allows only white light in the license plate illumination lamps. Any other color may reduce the readability of the number, which is unacceptable by law. In addition, special blue colors are used for license plates and lighting fixtures. services, ordinary citizens are prohibited from imitating their special services. signals or car coloring.
Turn signals
Using blue in turn signals is the most dangerous idea of all. Other drivers may simply not understand that the driver of such a car is turning - this will create a lot of emergency situations.
Naturally, the law prohibits the use of blue in turn signals:
- turn signals related to the front of the car must be white, yellow or orange;
- and the rear turn signals are yellow, orange or red.
According to the standard, all car turn signals are yellow or yellow-orange.
