Traffic rules of the Russian Federation. Signs of special regulations

Sign 5.1 "Motorway"

Sign 5.1 is used to designate roads on which traffic regulations are in force, establishing the procedure for driving on highways. These requirements are specified in Section 16 of the Traffic Regulations, as well as in paragraphs 9.4 of the Traffic Regulations (location of the vehicle on the roadway) and 10.3 of the Traffic Regulations (traffic speed).

The main distinguishing feature of the “Motorway” sign from other signs of special regulations is the green color of its background versus the blue and white of the other signs of this group and other road signs.

The main characteristic of roads called "Motorways" is that they are expressways of very good quality, with mandatory physical separation of oncoming directions, and they do not intersect with other roads at the same level.

On roads of this type there are a number of restrictions on movement and maneuvers. These restrictions (which are prohibited on highways) are listed in paragraph 16.1 of the traffic rules and will be briefly summarized at the end of the article.

The “Motorway” sign is installed at the beginning of the motorway and before each exit onto the motorway. One of the options for placing sign 5.1 is below in the figure.

Green with sign

Previously, sign 5.1 “Highway” is installed with one of the plates 8.1.1, 8.1.3, 8.1.4 “Distance to object” or plates 8.3.1, 8.3.2 “Directions of action”. The signs are used depending on the location of the road on which the preliminary sign 5.1 is installed in relation to the highway.

Repeated 5.1 signs may be installed after entering the highway.

Sign 5.2 “End of the motorway”

This sign indicates the end of the section of road indicated by sign 5.1 "Motorway".

Sign 5.2 “End of the motorway” is installed at the end of the motorway and at the beginning of exits from the motorway. Another sign 5.2 can be pre-installed with plate 8.1.1 “Distance to object” at a distance of 400 and 1000 meters to the end of the highway.

Exit from the highway

Sign 5.3 “Road for cars”

Sign 5.3 “Road for cars” is used to designate a road intended for the movement of cars, buses and motorcycles only. The sign is installed at the beginning of the road.

The beginning of the road for cars

The preliminary sign “Road for cars” is installed with one of the plates 8.1.1, 8.1.3, 8.1.4 “Distance to the object”, or with one of the plates 8.3.1 - 8.3.3 “Directions of action”. Plates are used depending on the location of the preliminary sign 5.3 in relation to the road for cars.

The same driving and maneuvering restrictions apply to cars on roads as on motorways. These restrictions are listed at the end of the article.

Sign 5.4. “End of the road for cars” is installed at the end of the road marked with sign 5.3.

Sign 5.5. “One-way road” is used to designate a road or roadway along which the movement of vehicles over its entire width is carried out in one direction, and is installed at the beginning of the road or roadway.

Sign coverage area : up to sign 5.6 “End of one-way road”.

Permitted directions : straight, left, right, SIGN DOES NOT PROHIBIT REVERSE TRAFFIC , except for the places listed in paragraphs 8.11, 8.12 of the Rules.

It must be remembered that on one-way roads, stopping and parking are allowed not only in the direction of movement of cars on the right side of the road, BUT ALSO ON THE LEFT:

· Trucks with a permissible maximum weight of more than 3.5 tons are allowed to stop on the left side of the road only for loading and unloading cargo .

In cases where there are no horizontal markings dividing the roadway into the number of lanes, drivers must mentally divide its width by the number of lanes for the vehicles the driver is driving, and it is necessary that the mental lane be wide enough for unhindered movement of the car. (clause 9.1)

Repeated sign 5.5 is installed after intersections with complex layouts.

REFERENCE*** The sign may not be installed:

— at the beginning of exits at intersections at different levels, driveways to service facilities where one-way traffic is carried out;

- at the beginning of a one-way roadway, separated from a roadway with oncoming traffic by a dividing strip or boulevard, on roads with separate routing, in cases where visibility of the roadway with oncoming traffic is ensured from each of the roadways.

Sign 5.6 “End of a one-way roadis installed at the end of the road or carriageway marked with sign 5.5. It is allowed to install preliminary sign 5.6 with plate 8.1.1.

Signs 5.7.1 and 5.7.2 “Exit to a one-way roadare installed in front of all side exits to a section of road or carriageway marked with sign 5.5.

Installed in front of all side exits on one-way roads. Signs are placed above other signs installed with them on the same support.

1. The arrow indicates the direction of travel on a one-way road.

2. Crossing a one-way road is not prohibited .

3. At an intersection in front of which sign 5.7.1 is installed, turning LEFT is prohibited . BUT DOES NOT PROHIBIT TURN

4. At an intersection in front of which there is a sign 5.7.2 , turning RIGHT is prohibited . BUT DOES NOT PROHIBIT TURN

(In practice, in traffic situations with heavy traffic, this maneuver is limited by installing signs: 3.1. “Entry prohibited” or mandatory signs 4.1.1. -4.1.2, 4.1.4. limiting such a maneuver )

REFERENCE* It is permissible not to install signs at exits from territories adjacent to the road if entry into these territories is possible only from the section of the road marked with sign 5.5.

Sign 5.8 “Reverse traffic” is used to designate sections of roads on which, with the help of reversible traffic lights or signs 5.15.7, the movement of vehicles is regulated along separate lanes of the roadway with alternately granting the right to move in the opposite direction.

The sign is installed: at the beginning of a road or section with reverse traffic. Repeated sign 5.8 is installed after each controlled intersection, as well as after an unregulated intersection with a complex layout

.

Sign 5.9 “End of reversible traffic” is installed at the end of a section of road with reversible traffic, indicated by the sign, cancels the effect of sign 5.8 “Reverse traffic”.

Sign 5.10 “Exit to a road with reverse traffic” is used to indicate exits to a section of the road marked with sign 5.8, and is installed at all side exits to such a road .

It is permissible not to install a sign at exits from territories adjacent to the road if entry into these territories is possible only from the section of the road marked with sign 5.8.

See Section 6.7.

· Drivers turning onto a reversible road marked with sign 5.10 must drive in the far right lane, incl . and WHEN TURNING LEFT . Changing lanes is allowed only after the driver is convinced that traffic in this direction is also permitted in other lanes. (see clause 9.8)

· It is PROHIBITED to drive into the lane intended for reverse traffic when the reverse traffic light is not working or prohibiting.

· It is necessary to change lanes to the lane indicated by the traffic light arrow when there is a prohibiting signal or the reverse traffic light signal is turned off, or when approaching

to Sign 5.9
“End of reverse movement” .

What is prohibited on motorways and roads for cars

The following types of traffic and maneuvers are prohibited on “motorways” and “roads for motor vehicles”:

  • Movement of pedestrians, pets, bicycles, mopeds, tractors and self-propelled vehicles;
  • Movement of mechanical vehicles, the permitted speed of which, according to their technical characteristics or their technical condition, is less than 40 km/h. That is, when the vehicle is physically unable to move at a speed of 40 km/h or more;
  • Stopping outside special parking areas marked with sign 6.4 “Parking (parking space)” or 7.11 “Rest area”. For more information about stopping and parking on these roads, see the article Stopping and parking a vehicle outside a populated area. What to do in the event of a forced stop or breakdown on the roadway - in the comments in section 16 of the traffic rules;
  • Movement of trucks with a permissible maximum weight of more than 3.5 tons beyond the 2nd lane. Large trucks on a wide roadway are only allowed to occupy lanes 1 and 2;
  • Entry into technological gaps in the dividing strip, incl. turning around through a gap in the median. Technological gaps in the dividing strips are designed for special equipment that serves the road. Entry into them is prohibited;
  • Reversing. This maneuver may be needed when, for example, you missed your exit. The speed on the motorway is high. Of the drivers driving (catching up) behind you, no one expects that the car in front will go in reverse towards the flow. Such a maneuver is dangerous and therefore prohibited. Before exiting, you need to change lanes;

Until 2021, driving lessons were still prohibited on motorways. These types of roads were considered dangerous for learning. In addition, driving lessons take place at speeds of up to 40 km/h, which is the lower limit of the permitted speed on highways.

As of January 1, 2021, this ban was lifted, so both the highway and the road for cars were allowed to be used for driving lessons.

A complete list of road signs with special requirements with brief comments (explanations) on the website is posted in Appendix 1 of the Traffic Regulations.

Motorway sign

Motorway road sign is installed at the beginning of the motorway, as well as at all entrances to this road:

Let me remind you that when driving on a highway, the driver must comply with the requirements of section 16 of the traffic rules, which will soon be discussed in a separate article.

Here I will just remind you of the main features of the rules for highways:

  • The maximum speed is 110 km/h.
  • The movement of vehicles whose speed does not exceed 40 km/h, as well as bicycles, mopeds, tractors and self-propelled vehicles is prohibited.
  • It is prohibited to enter technological gaps, as well as stop for parking outside specially designated areas.
  • Cars with a permissible maximum weight of more than 3.5 tons cannot move beyond the second lane.
  • Reversing and practice driving are prohibited.
