Red markings on the road - what do they mean?

On February 20, 2021, GOST R 51256 “Technical means of organizing road traffic” was adopted. Road markings. Classification. Technical requirements". The document comes into force on June 1, 2021. This GOST establishes requirements for road markings.

New road markings from June 1, 2021 - GOST R 51256

  1. New road markings;
  2. Safety island;
  3. Yellow markings;
  4. Road markings are blue;
  5. Orange markings;
  6. When will the new markings appear on the roads?

Let's consider the part of the standard that is of interest to road users. New types of markup have been added, for some types of existing markup it is possible to use yellow color, and blue color has been added for markup 1.7.

New road markings

Tram station

A new type of markings 1.17, indicating stopping places for route vehicles.

Stops for trackless vehicles are indicated by markings 1.17.1 - new marking number 1.17; for tram stops with tracks located in the center of the road, markings 1.17.2 have been added. It is applied on the roadway on both sides, has a width and pitch of 1 meter. Currently not included in the Traffic Rules.

    1.26 (color - yellow) - designates a section of the intersection that is prohibited from entering if there is a traffic jam ahead along the route that will force the driver to stop, creating an obstacle to the movement of vehicles in the transverse direction, with the exception of turning right or left in the cases established by these Rules. The marking can be used independently or in conjunction with road sign 1.35.

    Amended to the Traffic Rules from April 28, 2021.

Yellow marking line along the roadside and curb

Fine and deprivation of rights for crossing a double solid marking line. turn left and turn across a double continuous lane

Very often on the roads there is a yellow line along the side of the road and curb. You can also see markings of a different color: white or orange. Some drivers don't know which one has priority.

Let's try to find the answer to this question and figure out what types of markup there are.

Types of road markings by color

Everyone knows what functions markup performs.

Here are the main ones:

  • complements the requirements of road signs;
  • informs about approaching road signs;
  • informs about approaching dangerous sections of the road;
  • marks the roadway and separates traffic lanes.

If you look at the appendices to the traffic rules, they usually contain a list of road signs and markings. Horizontal color markings are divided into three types:

  • white - constant, with its help most of all symbols are applied - solid, dotted, dividing stripes, zebra, stop line, etc.;
  • orange - temporary, if you see it, it means that road work is underway somewhere nearby and you need to be guided by the requirements of the orange lines;
  • yellow is also a permanent one, it is used solely for the sake of convenience and good visibility, it is applied in most cases in the area of bus stops.

Yellow markings - what does it mean?

It complements the requirements of the signs - stopping or parking is prohibited (3.27 and 3.28). Fortunately, in the Russian Federation there are only three main types of this markup, so it will not be difficult to remember them.

However, you need to clearly remember what it means, otherwise you can receive significant fines, or even lose your car altogether, if you park it in a prohibited place - the towing service in Moscow is not asleep.

Kinds:

  • 1.4 - a solid line, which is mainly applied at a short distance (10-20 centimeters) from the curb or roadside. Its presence indicates that stopping in this area is prohibited. It may indicate the coverage area of sign 3.27. Thus, you cannot stop at the allocated interval, much less leave the car for longer than 5 minutes;
  • 1.10 - dotted line. Warns the driver that parking is prohibited on the marked section of the roadway (in addition to or placed separately from sign 3.28);
  • 1.17 - zigzag line. It is painted on the asphalt where route vehicles stop to transport passengers or taxis. According to traffic regulations, parking here is also prohibited.

It should be said that sign 3.28 (Parking prohibited) may allow stopping to pick up and unload passengers and unload the car. You can also stop traffic in emergency cases, but there must be good reasons for this - technical faults, health problems, obstacles blocking the passage.

Markings 1.4 and 1.10 can be applied along the edge of the roadway outside the city. In this case, you cannot cross it, much less stop behind or in front of it. In this case, you are violating the traffic rules that do not allow driving on the side of the road.

As you can see, there will be no problems with memorization. Where the markings end, you can safely stop and park.

About penalties

What are the penalties for crossing the yellow line, parking and stopping in its coverage area?

If the line is drawn along the side of the road (1.4), then crossing it will subject you to article 12.15. Part 1 - failure to comply with instructions regarding the location of the vehicle on the road, driving on the side of the road - a fine of 1,500 rubles.

For similar violations committed within the city limits, Article 12.16 Part 4 will be applied to you - a fine of 1,500 rubles. For residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the punishment will be more severe - 12.16 p.5 - 3 thousand rubles. and evacuation of the car to the impound area.

As we know, in big cities, parking is a constant problem, so evacuation service employees are never idle, and patrol cars with “Parcon” drive around the city to fix cars parked illegally.

conclusions

From all of the above we draw conclusions:

  • yellow lines are drawn where stopping and parking are prohibited;
  • for violation of requirements, such a measure as detention of the vehicle is provided;
  • fines are 1,500 or 3,000 rubles for Moscow residents.

Safety island

The markings 1.16.1 - 1.16.3 indicating guide islands have been corrected. Markup 1.1 is excluded from the image. Now we can say for sure that the island is limited by marking 1.1, and the designation 1.16.1 - 1.16.3 is applied inside this island. Previously, there was an ambiguous understanding of the use of such markings and questions remained regarding the qualification of offenses.

What do red markings on the road mean?

The yellow zigzag line is not a sign prohibiting any action , but, on the contrary, indicates that taxis and minibuses can stop on this section of the road. The length of this line largely depends on the number of vehicles capable of simultaneously being in the designated place.

What do yellow road markings mean? According to traffic regulations, yellow road markings 1.4, 1.10, 1.17.1, 1.17.2, 1.26 are also permanent. It’s not difficult to remember: there are only three types of yellow road markings, namely: a yellow solid line, a yellow broken line and, finally, a yellow zigzag line .

What do road markings mean?

Also, any marking can be temporary or permanent. The first is most often used in the case of construction or repair work on the road.

In some European countries it can be recognized by its yellow or orange color; in Russia this marking is characterized by a red color.

If the temporary markings of the road surface do not coincide with the permanent ones, then the temporary ones should be taken into account.

These road markings can be represented by lines and symbols. They are usually applied to bridge supports, overpasses, inside tunnels, on parapets, curbs and fences. This type of marking serves to increase the visibility of certain objects by road users.

With its help, you can have a good understanding of the size of an object. Indicating the dimensions of various bridges and tunnels is very helpful when driving through unfamiliar terrain. Vertical markings are applied with white and black paint.

It is also used to mark the side surfaces of barriers on highways and traffic islands.

Red red road markings: myth or reality

Most drivers are accustomed to seeing white markings on the roads. And when they come across a traffic control device that has a different shade, there may be some delays in decision making. Yes, yes, road markings can be not only white!

Red road markings are applied in Russia when carrying out repair or construction work. Accordingly, its lifetime does not exceed the duration of these operations. Essentially, this is a temporary marking. In European countries it is done in yellow or orange. Such bright colors were not chosen by chance. The driver must see that the permanent markings are not currently valid.

Red road markings

Temporary markings of the roadway indicate a reorganization of vehicle traffic. This means that this type of marking may contradict permanent markings and even traffic signs. In this case, the driver must follow the temporary signs.

As we can see, red horizontal markings do not appear in any of the points. But then what should a driver do if there are markings, but there are no rules? The only sane answer to such a paradox is the subjective perception of color. In other words, the red color you perceive is, from the point of view of traffic authorities, orange.

Yury (Saveria) However, there are times when driving into the oncoming lane will not be punishable. Such cases are quite common. Avoiding an obstacle in the oncoming lane will not be considered a meeting if there are simply no other exits.

You just need to do it carefully, without creating any interference. For example, on a road with two lanes for traffic in one direction, avoiding an obstacle in the left lane is carried out only on the right side. But if there is only one lane, then entering the oncoming lane is allowed.

Pavel (Jaja) Yuri Kornilov, you are a little wrong. if the protocol is drawn up according to Part 4 of Article 12.15, then it does not go to any analysis group - the material is immediately sent to the court. in court - imprisonment for 4-6 months. for part 3 of the same article - a fine of 1000-1500 is imposed by the unit commander (or a judge, if part 4 is reclassified to 3 in court)

Yellow markings on the road - what does it mean?

Therefore, be careful when parking. There were cases when the paint was not renewed on time, and it was difficult to see its color. However, it will be quite difficult for you to prove that you are right to the inspector.

Therefore, if in any doubt, it is best to park your car somewhere else. In large populated areas, an incorrectly abandoned car may well be picked up with the help of a tow truck.

It's a little more complicated with yellow markings. Firstly, it can highlight traffic lanes to improve visibility.

In this case, drivers should comply with all requirements, as in the case of white.

If yellow markings are painted on the curb, near it or on the side of the road, this means that parking or stopping a vehicle in this area is prohibited. It is often supplemented by a corresponding road sign.

Road markings for traffic rules 2021 and its characteristics

1.19 - warns of approaching a narrowing of the roadway (a section where the number of lanes in a given direction is reduced) or marking lines 1.1 or 1.11 separating traffic flows in opposite directions. In the first case, marking 1.19 can be used in combination with signs 1.20.1-1.20.3;

1.18 — indicates the lane directions allowed at the intersection. Used alone or in combination with signs 5.15.1, 5.15.2; markings with the image of a dead end are applied to indicate that turning onto the nearest roadway is prohibited; markings permitting a left turn from the leftmost lane also permit a U-turn;

  • to separate road lanes intended for traffic in opposite directions;
  • to limit lanes in dangerous areas;
  • to mark the edge of the roadway if driving onto it is prohibited;
  • in parking lots to designate a space intended for one car.

1.11 Solid line combined with dashed line . Used to indicate the boundaries of road lanes. In this case, rebuilding is possible only from the side of the strokes. You can cross this marking only if the driver is completing an overtaking or detour.

What does solid red on the road mean?

Therefore, if you are caught under Article 12.15.4, it is best to agree with the traffic police officer and give him your license. And then, during the analysis, “repent” to the inspector. In extreme cases, you will be sent to court.

But unlike traffic police officers, judges are more loyal to those who plead guilty and impose the minimum punishment - a fine. But if you are firmly convinced that the rules were not violated, and the protocol was drawn up unfairly, start the “war” from the very first minutes.

In the protocol, in the column “Explanations of the violator,” write: “Did not violate traffic rules, qualified legal assistance is required.” Next, make a complaint (either with the help of a lawyer or on an online forum) and register it with the traffic police department.

A response to a complaint is required to be given within 10 days, but in reality it takes up to a month.
But the court has only two months from the date of violation to deprive you of your rights. And then there is a high chance that the case simply will not be considered on time. The concept of “off-road place” is not defined by any legal regulation. Then the road signs take on different shapes - they are round, square and triangular. Events in Czech Television: January Changes in transport - Expansion of the motorway network through ten new brands. From January, motorists will be greeted with updated or new road signs in various locations.

It also changes the color and shape of the highway marker - it's green again in a square format.

Blue markings

One of the exciting questions is: “Is it true that there will be blue markings on the roads?” Yes its true. This is marking 1.7, indicating traffic lanes within the intersection. If there are many directions of movement at an intersection, then the white color becomes motley and can only be visually confusing. Blue color seems more optimal for these purposes.

Red markings on the road: what does it mean? temporary road markings

Graphic symbols are one way to regulate movement. Let's look at what red markings on the road oblige drivers to do.

Kinds

The main purpose of the markings applied to the road surface is to provide information about the separation of lanes, limiting the “islands” of safety, rules and zones for parking, overtaking, as well as traffic distribution. Graphic markings can appear separately or be duplicated by corresponding road signs.

According to the method of application, there are vertical and horizontal markings. The markings used are broken and solid lines, arrows, pictograms, and their combinations.

Vertical markings, represented by a combination of white and black stripes, indicate the dimensions of road structures for visual orientation.

In some cases, in addition to color, a noise effect is used to attract the driver’s attention.

A detailed description of all types of graphic signs on the road is described by the Russian Federation Traffic Regulations in section Appendix No. 2, “Road markings and its characteristics” in accordance with GOST R 51256-99 and GOST R 52289-2004.

Color spectrum

If we focus purely on the provisions of the above section, then the traffic rules regulate the use of only three colors of graphic indicators:

  • white (all except 1.4, 1.10 and 1.17). The designations of roadside structures are painted white and black;
  • yellow - 1.4, 1.10 and 1.17;
  • orange (temporary).

White color means that the graphic indicator is permanent and, if necessary, is duplicated by stationary road signs. Yellow color means parking and stopping rules. 1.4 – “Stopping is prohibited”, 1.10 – “Parking is prohibited” (the driver is given no more than 5 minutes to board and disembark passengers). Apply at the edge of the roadway or on top of curbs.

Duplicated by appropriate pointers. Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated September 25, 2003 N 595 approves the yellow color for 1.17. The “crown” painted at the edge of the roadway means specially designated places for stopping taxis and fixed-route vehicles.

If road markings are not clearly visible or their meaning contradicts the established signs, the driver must be guided by the meaning of the road signs.

As we can see, red horizontal markings do not appear in any of the points. But then what should a driver do if there are markings, but there are no rules? The only sane answer to such a paradox is the subjective perception of color. In other words, the red color you perceive is, from the point of view of traffic authorities, orange.

Red horizontal road markings do exist. This color is used to indicate temporary markings in Austria and Switzerland. It means repair work or the need for temporary reorganization of traffic. It is acceptable to use red markings on the territory of Ukraine.

One of the points of the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated February 11, 2013 No. 111 “On amendments to the Traffic Rules” was the introduction of a new type of graphic designation - 1.15. A horizontal red stripe with white dash-dot lines indicates where the bicycle path crosses the roadway.

Red color is also used to highlight pedestrian crossings. In places where there are frequent collisions with pedestrians, the usual zebra lines are supplemented with red inserts, which make the crossing area more visible. This innovation is especially relevant in the winter season. The use of red in marking 2.3 has the same purpose.

This vertical marking is used to paint shields under signs 4.7-4.9.

Time marking

Temporary markings of the roadway indicate a reorganization of vehicle traffic. This means that this type of marking may contradict permanent markings and even traffic signs. In this case, the driver must follow the temporary signs.

For example, during repair work, the orange horizontal line may intersect with the oncoming traffic separation strip.

But crossing even a double solid white line in this case is not a violation if the car does not leave the boundaries indicated by temporary signs.

As a reminder, temporary road sign guides take precedence over road markings and permanent signs. Such signs can duplicate temporary markings or stand alone.

If the requirements are not met, the driver will face a fine. You can challenge the decision of the traffic police officer using photos or video recording.

You can only refer to the poor visibility of the markings on the road (pollution, wear).

You will not be able to use color mismatch as an argument if the markings were applied with certified materials in accordance with GOST R 52289-2004 and GOST R 51256-99.

GOST

Some of the established provisions:

  • temporary horizontal markings are mandatory if road traffic needs to be reorganized for more than 3 days;
  • when applying markings that redirect traffic flow, the position of the lines on the road surface must correspond to the line of installation of fencing and guiding objects on the site in accordance with paragraph 2.5.2;
  • Temporary markings on the road must be made using orange demarcation material. In this case, removal of permanent markings on the site is not necessary. Irregular markings should be demarked immediately if they are no longer necessary.

What does a solid red line on the road mean?

What does the yellow dashed line and solid marking line mean?

Like the previous version of the marking, it is located at the edge of the roadway along the curb, with an indent of a few centimeters from its base (10-20 cm). Implies a strict ban on stopping traffic in this area, even temporarily. Sometimes duplicated by road sign No. 3.

27, meaning “Stopping prohibited.” The line itself is displayed in the traffic rules as sign No. 1.4. There may be so-called “corridors”.

Such places where the markings are interrupted can be used for parking, if this does not interfere with the exit of other vehicles or the movement of pedestrians.

Interesting: Checking your driver's license using the traffic police database online

Residents of large settlements have recently quite often had to deal with the phenomenon of a yellow broken marking line, a yellow solid marking line, and also a broken yellow line along the curb.

It would seem that even someone unfamiliar with traffic rules knows that road markings are necessary to ensure proper movement in the lane.

Such a designation helps to better navigate the roadway, and requires repeated updating after it becomes less noticeable over time.

What are the dangers of crossing a solid marking line?

An insurmountable obstacle on the roadway may prevent the vehicle from moving along the selected lane: a pedestrian, damage to the road surface, an accident, an emergency stop of the vehicle in front, a landslide, etc. According to the rules, the driver is forced to avoid the obstacle by changing lanes on the right.

  • Single line 1.1 delimits traffic flows moving in opposite directions and sets traffic limits within lanes on particularly dangerous sections of the road. Also, using this marking, parking spaces in the parking area are indicated.
  • Single line 1.2.1 indicates the right edge of the roadway.
  • Double line 1.3 separates oncoming traffic on four or more lane roads.

Today I took my license and the question was “If there are white and orange markings on the roadway and they contradict each other, what should you do in this situation?” Answer options: 1. Follow the white markings 2. Follow the orange markings 3. The rules do not regulate

So the correct answer is: 2

I have an acquaintance, a professional with more than 30 years of experience, when I learned tickets three years ago, he made more than 5 mistakes on each ticket. I think that many people forget the rules in theory, but over time they become stronger in practice. And in general, I don’t remember them in the traffic rules, but for some reason I knew about this marking.
