  • desire to obtain rights in the Russian Federation;
  • moving to a permanent place of residence in the country;
  • forced migration due to work in another country.

Translation of driver's license

When traveling abroad, residents of the Russian Federation should remember that their ID will be valid for the first sixty days of their stay there. In the future, in order to enjoy the rights, they will need a translation notarized in accordance with all the rules.

To carry out the translation and certification procedure, it is enough to present a copy of your driver’s license , since the final text is filed with it. It is worth considering that employees make it as close as possible to the main text on both sides of the ID.

Driver's license

Driver's licenses issued in different states carry different legal effects abroad. This depends on a number of factors: the compliance of local traffic rules with international standards, the existence of agreements between countries in this area, the openness of a given state to tourism and the compliance of the procedure for obtaining them with all international standards. For example, in the Russian Federation there are two categories of driver’s licenses: standard domestic and international. With a standard license, citizens of our country can also drive a car in many foreign countries (especially with developed tourism). However, in the event of an insured accident on the road, the use of a standard ID may result in a refusal to receive insurance payment. Throughout the territory of the Russian Federation, citizens of most foreign countries, if they have a notarized translation into Russian, are allowed to drive a car according to the internal rights of their state. The permitted period is limited only by the validity of the VISA. However, this is not the first year in the State. There is a debate in the Duma on this matter and perhaps, after some time, some other restrictions will be introduced.

The need to translate a driver's license(s)

If the driver's license is written in a foreign language and is not fully duplicated in the Latin alphabet, a notarized translation will be required to legalize it. International driver's licenses do not need translation, but for domestic driver's licenses of other countries, on the territory of the Russian Federation, translation is required.

Is translation of notarization required in Russia?

Notary seal and documents with pen lying on table

Many people believe that translation of notarized documents is not needed in Russia. This opinion is wrong. There are situations when authorities do not require such a document, but it is extremely important that the car owner has it in his hands. You should always remember that attaching a notarized translation to the original certificate is prohibited .

Notarized translations are not required in several cases. These include:

  • impossibility of carrying out the certification procedure by a notary, since the certification does not meet state standards;
  • short stay in the country.

It is important that the validity period of such a translation is equal to the possible period of use of the original document.

What the law says

There are several laws regulating traffic on Russian roads. The first, also the main one, is the norms of the Vienna International Convention on Road Traffic . According to these standards, driving in most European countries (including Russia and Ukraine) is possible with the help of licenses that contain records of the driver, duplicated in Latin. The next norm is already Russian, according to which you can use driver’s licenses that have entries in Russian.

The law also indicates the validity period of Ukrainian rights in Russia. According to the norms, you can stay in the Russian Federation with a Ukrainian license for exactly the same amount of time as with a Russian one – right up to the end of their validity period. It is worth considering that a Ukrainian is allowed to stay on the territory of the Russian Federation for up to 90 days, and up to 60 days if he plans to register and stay for a longer period.

Is it necessary to make a translation?

As can be seen from the law, you can drive a vehicle only when the information on your license can be read. So to the question “Is it necessary to make a translation?” You can safely answer - no, it’s not necessary. Moreover, this rule is typical for all types of rights:

  • Modern rights have dubbing in the Latin alphabet, so that they can be used according to the rules of international norms;
  • In the old (Soviet-style) licenses, entries are made in Russian, so they can be used according to current Russian rules.

So, to travel to Russia, it is not necessary to run to a notary and ask for an official translation. But if you are going to use your driver’s license for other purposes (not just to drive a car), then a translation is still needed.

Translation of driver's license into English

Translating a driver's license into English is a very responsible procedure. For this reason, it is necessary to carefully check the work done, especially the absence of errors in the spelling of proper names . It is worth drawing the attention of the employees of the organization performing the translation to their writing in English in other documents, for example, in a foreign passport.

If the driver does not have the translation in his hands, traffic service employees may issue a fine and assume that he does not have the right to drive a car at all.

This is supported by Article 12.7 of the Administrative Code :

1. Driving a vehicle by a driver who does not have the right to drive a vehicle (except for instructional driving) shall entail the imposition of an administrative fine in the amount of five thousand to fifteen thousand rubles.

Particular attention should be paid to the translation of information written in stamps and individual columns of the certificate. It must transmit all data as much as possible, otherwise the document will be considered invalid. It is definitely worth clarifying the question of the need for a notary’s seal on such documents in order to be able to use them for their intended purpose. Otherwise, you will have to completely collect and redo the necessary papers.

When is it necessary to translate a driver's license?

Let's look at each case.
A car gives the owner freedom of movement, and nowadays, traveling abroad in your own or a rented car has become completely ordinary, and sometimes even more exciting than by plane or train. Many people who are going on a tourist or business trip abroad for the first time have a question: do they need a translation of their driver’s license and PTS in order to travel around the target country by car? Translation of these documents into the language of the country where you are going is necessary, because each country has its own rules for issuing a driver’s license that allows driving vehicles on its territory.

Owners of Soviet-style rights need to remember that they are valid abroad for only 2 months, and after 60 days they will need a notarized translation. Otherwise, according to Russian law, in the absence of a translated and notarized translation of the driver’s license, traffic police officers of the target state may confiscate the license. To avoid this, order the translation of your rights in advance.

2) In order for a foreigner to drive a car on the territory of the Russian Federation, it is necessary to make a certified translation of a driver’s license. Only after this procedure will rights issued on the territory of another state be considered valid in Russia.

3) When moving from any foreign country to Russia, it is necessary to complete a notarized translation of a driver’s license or driver’s license in order to be able to drive a car on the territory of the Russian Federation.

4) If you came to Russia for the purpose of work and are going to drive a car on the territory of this state, you need to order a notarized translation of your driver's license or driver's license into Russian.

Features of translation of a driver's license or driver's license and PTS.

Translation of PTS

A translation of a vehicle passport is a must for those who are planning to travel abroad with their own car, and for those who want to confirm with foreign authorities that they have a vehicle. It is important to remember that different countries and services have different requirements for the translation of this document. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify in advance with the embassy exactly how the translation should be certified. For example, the British Consulate accepts a translation of the PTS into English, certified by the seal of the translator or translation agency. To perform such a translation, the original PTS or its notarized copy is required.

Features of driving license translation

Like the translation of a number of other standard official documents, notarized translation of a driver’s license is a service whose cost calculation does not depend on the number of characters and symbols in the finished document.
When translating a driver's license, the owner's last name will be indicated in the same spelling as in the passport (for English) or in accordance with the rules of transliteration (for other languages). Notarized translation of a driver's license - stitched, sealed sheets: translation with the translator's signature and a photocopy, or a notarized copy of the document. The translation is not attached to the original certificate.

If you need a notarized translation of your driver's license, you do not need to give your license to a translation agency, so you do not have to give up driving for a single day. In order for a translator to start working with a document, the original license is not needed - a clear photocopy is sufficient, on which all numbers and inscriptions, as well as seals, are clearly visible and legible.

If it is necessary to present, at the request of a government agency, a translation of a driver's license filed with a notarized photocopy, you must also provide the notary with the original driver's license and photocopies of all pages of the document.
