Category B1 on your driving license allows you to drive exotic vehicles such as tricycles and quadricycles. Drivers who already have category A or B can automatically add B1 to their license. Persons who do not have a license will have to attend a driving school and pass exams at the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate before driving such vehicles.
What is the B1 rights category for?
Having received a category “A” license, which is permission to drive motorcycles, the driver does not have the right to drive a motorcycle with three or more wheels, which are now equivalent to a passenger car.
The new B1 license category, in contrast to A, gives the right to drive quadricycles and tricycles. The driver of such a vehicle without the appropriate category of license will receive a fine in the amount of 5 to 15 thousand rubles, according to the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, which is equivalent to driving a vehicle without a license.
On the new “crusts” there is a special column about the assignment of category B1. If you have an old-style license, you will have to contact the traffic police to replace it. This category can be assigned either with passing the appropriate exam, if there is a lower category, for example, A1, or without it, if category “A” is already open.

Special notes in category B1
Having dealt with the B1 category on the driver’s license, the driver wonders what kind of marks in Latin characters are associated with it.
Newly introduced abbreviations can be placed in a strictly defined place. There are 14 columns in a driver's license, of which the first nine are on the front side, and on the back from 10 to 14. To record information in columns 10 - 12, a tabular form is used, and the last column (No. 12) is reserved for making special notes.
The most common two Latin abbreviations are:
- AS (stands for Automotive Steering) gives permission to drive a vehicle equipped with an automobile-type seat and the same steering wheel. As some drivers joke, "AS" means ace on the road, but that's not true.
- MS (stands for Motorcycle Steering) makes it possible to control a quadricycle or tricycle equipped with a motorcycle steering wheel and seat.
Thus, the “AS” encoding opposite the B1 license category means that this is permission to drive only passenger cars or vehicles with a steering wheel and seat like a car.
Putting the value “MS” in the same place will mean that vehicles with a motorcycle-type steering wheel and seating position are available for control. Such values can be seen in category B or A if only one is open. When accessing both, there will be no specials or “MS”).
Also in column 12 there may be a restriction “ML” opposite M, which means restrictions justified by medical prescriptions.
Column 14, in addition to driving experience, may contain special encodings. Most often they are medical restrictions. The encodings in column 12 refer to a specific category (the one opposite which they are marked), and the notes in line 14 are relevant to all open categories, including the AT mark. This mark - AT - means that you can only drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission - an automatic transmission. The mark is on your license if you take an exam at a driving school and learn to drive a car with an automatic transmission. Those who are trained to drive manually are allowed to drive cars regardless of whether the transmission is manual or automatic.
Why was the B1 category introduced?
The development of technology has led to the fact that previously one-piece copies of unusual vehicles, such as tricycles and quadricycles, have become available to a large number of drivers.
Having a large engine and a weight greater than that of a motorcycle, they become full-fledged road users, on a par with passenger cars.
The B1 category of driver's license is designed to improve road safety, equating such vehicles to passenger cars, because the skills of driving a scooter or moped will clearly not be enough to fully control a wider vehicle that occupies an entire lane.
Thus, the primary reason for the introduction of a new subcategory is concern for road safety and bringing the categories into line with European standards, where full-size motorcycle-powered vehicles are quite common and have equal rights.

What kind of transport can you drive with B1?
At this point it is worthwhile to dwell in more detail and carefully analyze the characteristics of vehicles that fit category B1. The most common misconception is that people often confuse quads with ATVs.
To avoid misunderstandings, it is worth considering these vehicles in more detail:
- An ATV is considered a four-wheeled vehicle with a motorcycle-type steering wheel and a similar seating position. Such transport is not intended for travel on public roads and an ATV is used more often as sports equipment or a specialized means of transportation.
- A quadricycle is a vehicle with four wheels and a car steering wheel. There are models of equipment equipped with a roof. Quite often, motorized strollers are classified as this type. It is also not uncommon for such vehicles to move using electric traction.
Driving in category B1
A B1 license allows you to drive quadricycles and tricycles. These vehicles are still exotic for Russians. It will probably be useful for many to know the official formulation of these concepts.
- A tricycle is a vehicle with an engine of up to 50 cc and three wheels. In any case, such vehicles must be registered with the traffic police.
- A quadricycle is a four-wheeled version of a motor vehicle, limited only by its curb weight, which should not exceed 550 kg.
Both one and the second equipment require registration with the traffic police and obtaining a driving license in the form of category B1. In both cases, if the rated speed of a motor vehicle is less than 25 km/h, it falls into another “weight category”, mopeds, and does not require such qualifications - category M is sufficient.
Note that electric motors are increasingly used in such vehicles, therefore, unlike internal combustion engines, power does not depend on the engine capacity, but on the traction force. A tricycle with an electric motor should not consume power more than 10 kW, and a quadricycle - more than 15 kW, otherwise the equipment becomes an “electric vehicle”.
An ATV should not be confused with a quadricycle, because the first does not have the right to travel on public roads, and is subject to registration with Technical Supervision, not being, in fact, a vehicle. In addition, an ATV does not have a cabin, while a quadricycle, as a rule, is equipped with a full-fledged cabin.

What has changed in the rights?
The new rights may include 16 different subcategories of transport. Each category has its own requirements and a certain number of types of transport, similar in functionality and characteristics.
- “A” – motorcycles with and without sidecars with a total weight of up to 400 kg.
- “A1” – light motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles. Owners of category “A1” are not allowed to drive simple motorcycles. The category is available for training from 16 years of age.
- “B” – “cars”, jeeps, small trucks, small family buses. Maximum weight under load 3.5 tons.
- “BE” – vehicles with heavy trailers.
- “B1” – tricycles and quadricycles. Not to be confused with an ATV.
- “C” – trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons. This also includes trucks with a trailer weighing less than 750 kg.
- “CE” is a truck weighing over 3.5 tons with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg.
- “C1” – trucks weighing from 3.5 to 7.5 tons. It is possible to use a trailer up to 750 kg.
- “C1E” – trucks up to 7.5 tons and trailers over 750 kg.
- "D" - buses. It is possible to drive with a trailer up to 750 kg.
- “DE” – bus with trailer from 750 kg.
- “D1” – minibuses with 8 to 16 seats, used for transporting people.
- “D1E” is a minibus with a trailer not intended for transporting people, weighing more than 750 kg. The maximum possible weight of the train under load is no more than 12 tons.
- “M” – moped (category can be opened from the age of 16).
- "Tm" - tram.
- “Tb” – trolleybus.
Pay attention to the features of the subcategories; the differences are not significant, but they exist. The main difference is the weight of the vehicles used and the weight of the trailers attached to the vehicle. In any case, you must understand and clearly explain to the traffic police officer which category your vehicle belongs to and why it belongs to it.
What does B1 rights category marked AS and MS mean?
In the third column of the driver's license category plate, additional marks are indicated that clarify what type of tricycle or quadricycle their holder has the right to drive.
- If the category B1 license is marked AS, this means that its owner has the right to drive a vehicle that is as similar as possible to a car, with a steering wheel and a full seat.
- If the category B1 license is marked MS, this means that its owner has the right to drive a vehicle that has a motorcycle seat and handlebars like a motorcycle.
- If both categories, A and B, are open, then there will be no such marks, since it is assumed that the owner of the license can drive any vehicle: a tricycle or a quadricycle.
Rights category B: subcategories B1 and BE
Differences between category B1 and B and BE
Based on the already existing category B, the names B1 and BE were formed. Learn more about category B1 in driving license – what it means. They differ in terms of permission to drive; B and B1 mean different vehicles.
Category B, already familiar to drivers, allows driving a passenger car with the following characteristics:
- weighing up to 3.5 tons;
- availability of no more than 8 seats.
The BE value in your license allows you to drive a category B vehicle with a trailer:
- weight up to 3.5 tons;
- the number of seats may be less than or equal to 8;
- trailer no more than 0.75 tons.
Category b1 allows you to drive two types of vehicles:
- tricycle;
- quadricycle
Category b1 provides access to the management of tricycles and quads.
Vehicles approved for driving under category B1 must have the following features:
- weighing less than 0.55 tons;
- have an engine capacity of over 50 cm3.
If the tricycle and quadricycle have characteristics lower than the above (weight less than 400 kg and engine power up to 15 kW), to control them you must open category “A”. A vehicle with an engine capacity of less than 50 cm3 is called a moped, and to drive it you must obtain the “M” category.
Differences between category B1 and B and BE
A license of category B1 does not provide the right to drive a passenger car, as category B, and especially a passenger car with a trailer, as provided by category BE. Although, very often, those with category B1 receive it along with B.
But if this is not indicated on the license, driving a passenger car is strictly prohibited. And further. It is prohibited to use a trailer with a carrying capacity of more than 750 kilograms without having subcategory BE, even if the main category B is open.
Driving license category D (D)
To drive a bus, the driver must obtain a category “D” license ( Clause 1, Article 25, 196-FZ “On Road Safety” ). Which vehicles fall into this category? This:
- transport that organizes the transportation of passengers with more than eight seats, excluding the driver's seat;
- category “D” vehicles coupled with a trailer whose weight does not exceed 750 kilograms.
A driver's license category “D” (“D”) provides the ability to drive buses of various sizes, regardless of weight. A bus-trailer combination with a maximum weight of the latter not exceeding 750 kg is also included in this category. If the weight of the trailer itself exceeds the required weight, the driver must open the “DE” category.
The right to drive vehicles of category “DE” refers to the category of buses with a heavy trailer weighing over 750 kilograms and articulated buses, which include two cabins - the so-called “accordions”. It is noteworthy that category “D” allows the driver to drive a vehicle from the subcategory “D1”, and “DE” - from the category “D1E”.
Subcategory “D1” includes vehicles for transporting passengers with more than eight and less than sixteen seats, with the exception of the driver’s seat, and vehicles of subcategory “D1” coupled with a trailer weighing no more than 750 kilograms.
Subcategory "D1E" includes heavy trailers and is suitable for the driver of a bus coupled with a trailer that is not used as a carrier of people and whose weight is less than 750 kilograms. The weight of the trailer hitch must not exceed the weight of the main vehicle without load, and the total weight of such a hitch is no more than 12 tons.
What cars can you drive with category B1?
When receiving this category from the traffic police, it is worth mentioning that you are also going to open the M category for driving motor vehicles. Otherwise, your document will be marked “ML” - that is, driving mopeds is prohibited.
As mentioned above, with category B1 you can ride a quadricycle or tricycle. The restriction for tricycles is that the engine capacity is no more than 500 cc, the speed can exceed 50 km/h. For quadricycles, speed is limited to 50 km/h, and weight is limited to 550 kg.
Also, having received category B, the driver can drive a passenger car, and with a category B1 license, also with an automatic transmission, plus B1 gives the right to drive a two-wheeled motorcycle.
How to restore lost rights
What vehicles can you drive with such a license?
A new driver's license with an open subcategory B1 provides the right to drive a microcar with three or four wheels. This is a completely new type of vehicle for Russia. Depending on the number of wheels, compact cars got their names - tricycles and quadricycles. Gradually their number on Russian roads is increasing. Abroad, they have long been used for transporting people and small cargo. Microcars are simple and easy to use, consume fuel economically, and do not take up much space in the garage.
Let's list what type of transport subcategory B1 applies to:
- tricycle;
- quadricycle;
- other vehicles with similar characteristics.
A tricycle belongs to the class of motor vehicles with 3 wheels, equipped specifically for movement on asphalt public roads. The internal combustion engine has a volume of up to 50 cubic meters. see Electric tricycles are also produced. The designers have provided for such a car a permissible maximum speed of more than 50 km/h. The wheels are located symmetrically in relation to the longitudinal middle plane.
Since the tricycle can travel on roads, it must be registered with the traffic police department within 10 days after purchase.
In conditions of congested roads in megacities, these cars are a good alternative to standard passenger cars. Small-sized models make it a little easier for drivers to move in traffic jams and can drive through difficult, rough terrain. Some three-wheeled bikes outshine even elite foreign cars with their presentable appearance.
Tricycles have two disadvantages:
- High price, for the same money you can buy a good car.
- Lack of an indoor interior for most models. Driving in bad weather will not be very comfortable.
A quadricycle is also a microcar with only four wheels and has a cabin with seats for the driver and passenger. It is legal to drive on roads for public transport, so the newly purchased model must be registered. The motor is designed for 20 horsepower; if instead of it there is an electric motor, then its power does not exceed 15 kW. The permissible total weight of the quadricycle is up to 550 kg including cargo. Can move at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
You need to be able to distinguish a quadricycle from an all-terrain vehicle (SUV), which according to technical specifications. parameters belongs to a different vehicle category. He needs a tractor driver's license.
If there is an AS mark
When subcategory B1 opens, the mark AS can be placed on the back of the certificate in section 12 of the table. This designation (Automotive Steering) indicates that this driver has the right to drive a car with a steering type control system that has two soft seats or one wide seat inside the cabin.
The AS mark allows you to replace the standard seat with a more comfortable one, like that of a passenger car.
