License plate mounting locations
The requirements for installing signs on a car are described in detail in the regulatory documentation GOST R 50577-2018. You must adhere to these rules to avoid penalties. First of all, you need to respect the geometry of the rooms:
- They should be installed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the car (deviation of no more than 30 degrees relative to the axis in a horizontal line and no more than 15 degrees in a vertical line is permissible).
- The installation height should be in the range of 300-1200 mm (if, due to the characteristics of the vehicle, it is not possible to install at a level less than 1200 mm, a height of up to 2000 mm is acceptable).
Signs must be clearly visible and cannot be obscured by lighting devices or other elements. It is prohibited to lower the vehicle's overhang angles using license plates. Also, they cannot be bent, they should not protrude beyond the side dimensions of the car.
Installation rules according to GOST
According to GOST requirements, any vehicle must have a place to install a license plate on the car. Two signs are attached to a passenger car: front and rear.
- The front sign must be fixed along the axis of symmetry of the car or to the left of it in the direction of travel.
- Install perpendicular to the axis with a permitted deviation of 3 degrees.
- It is necessary to ensure the visibility of the number at night from a distance of 20 m when illuminated by lanterns.
- It is allowed to secure the number using bolts and screws. It is prohibited to block the inscription RUS, the designation of the Russian flag.
The number should be fixed securely to ensure safety throughout the entire period of operation.
Traffic regulations prohibit:
- go beyond the side clearance, block the light signal devices;
- drill additional holes - when the landing recesses diverge, transitional structures are used for installation;
- block the license plate with glass, curtains and other devices.
Modern car brands are usually sold with special frames for the number, which only need to be snapped into place.

How to attach license plates to a car
To install license plates you need to do the following:
- It is better to buy bolts from a building supply store - with a smooth head, this will significantly reduce the likelihood of theft.
- Using a drill, you need to make a through hole in the bumper or in another element to which the license plate will be attached - in many cases, all you need to do is lift the car on a lift.
- Then you need to drill the part itself.
- Install a frame to secure license plates.
- The license plate is attached, as well as the bolts to it.
The use of plastic harnesses should not be considered an alternative to bolts. Since such fastening is very easy to remove with ordinary wire cutters. However, it makes sense to use them in conjunction with bolts and screws. The procedure for attaching the harnesses is quite simple, you just need to select them with a sufficient length. And then thread it through the hole behind the frame and cut off the excess.
Features of the dealer frame
When studying the question of how to secure a state number, it is important to take into account some features. All car enthusiasts should know them:
- The fastener itself must also meet certain requirements. The material used to make this mount is important.
- A license plate is attached when such a frame does not obscure the inscription or image of the license plate. After all, quite often a situation arises when the size of the bolts does not correspond to the size of the body holes. Drilling additional holes yourself is strictly prohibited.
- It is prohibited to use transparent or translucent materials to attach registration numbers.
How to attach license plates to a car so they don't get stolen
Theft of car signs in Russia is not uncommon. Most often, “nice” license plates and plates are stolen from cars from other regions. The scammers' procedure is usually as follows: the license plates are removed and a note is placed under the windshield wipers. In exchange for return, the stated amount must be transferred to the attacker’s account.
What tricks during installation entail liability for violating standards?
Car enthusiasts use various tricks to hide the license plate number. Among the common ones:
- Installation of different variations of grids. The act is illegal and is qualified under Part 2 of Art. 12.2 Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.
- Folding sign. When driving at low speeds, the mechanism does not work, and at 100 km/h the number folds under the influence of the wind.
- Reversible number. When driving at a speed of 50 km/h, the sign remains motionless; when the speed is exceeded, it turns down and is hidden. One of the most effective methods of concealment, however, when placing a video surveillance camera on a pole or traffic light on the side, the fact of the offense will be recorded.
- Infrared flashlights. Relevant in the dark for cameras with standard settings.
- Inverted numbers. With the development of technology, the method has become outdated, since modern cameras easily identify the license plate number.
- The application of reflectors and all kinds of varnish coatings does not create barriers to recognition at all.
- Covering one number or letter with a sticker. When stopped by a patrol officer, it will become difficult for the driver to confirm that the actions were unintentional.
- Magnetic frame for number. There is a frame at the bottom of the structure; a plate is attached on top of the sign, fragmentarily covering the numerical designations. When you press a button in the car, the mechanism stops working, but a traffic police officer can use a photo to record the violation.
- Using a curtain frame. Completely hides the numbers and operates when a signal is received from the interior.
Many car owners are looking for new ways to hide license plates from video cameras.
All of the listed methods of fastening refer to fastening in violation of the requirements and have long been familiar to patrol officers. The violator only needs to be in the field of view of the video camera installed in the traffic police vehicle, and all the devices will become obvious.
Fines for incorrect installation of license plates
Very significant fines are imposed for non-compliance with GOST requirements. In certain situations - temporary deprivation of a driver's license. Let's look at this question in more detail:
- For driving a car with illegible or incorrectly installed signs, a warning is given or a fine of 500 rubles is imposed.
- The use of a vehicle without license plates, as well as their absence in the designated places or the use of elements that interfere with their readability, is punishable by a fine of 5,000 rubles. or deprivation of a driver's license for a period of 1 to 3 months.
- For incorrectly installed transit license plates, drivers face the same consequences as in the case of permanent license plates. Fine 500 rubles or warning.
That's all we wanted to tell you about this topic. Set the numbers in accordance with GOST requirements and secure them properly - then it will be cheaper.

Number mount. What to pay attention to
Attaching a license plate is a procedure that car owners rarely encounter, no more than once every few years (not counting those cases when the license plates can be twisted intentionally). Most do not consider it necessary to go into the technical details of this procedure and in vain, since incorrectly attaching the license plate entails problems with the traffic police.
Often, a new car owner simply puts the received license plates in the trunk or under the glass. You shouldn’t do this, the fine is 5,000 rubles.
Where and how to attach the number? Almost all cars have a specially designated place for attaching a license plate, but the standards for different car brands are different. Even if there is no space for the number, the sign must be attached, and in accordance with the standard. The numbers must be located either along the axis of symmetry or in the direction of movement to the left of it.
Car owners often use reflective bolts. GOST has special requirements for such bolts. The bolts must have a white coating. Otherwise, the violator will have to pay at least 500 rubles. fine
To be fair, we note that a quarter of all passenger cars do not comply with this rule.
Traffic police officers, in turn, are in no hurry to issue fines to everyone, however, if the car violates the traffic rules, then this small defect will definitely be remembered.
How to protect your license plate from theft? Thieves follow a standard pattern: they remove license plates at night and leave a note on the windshield asking how much and where to pay. Don't want to buy your numbers? Buy several washers that unscrew from the back, disassemble the bumper and attach the plate.
Of course, there is no fastener that cannot be removed, it is a matter of time. Therefore, it is worth installing one on your car so that thieves spend longer.
Mount number. What's on the market? The simplest mounting of numbers is decorative, they cost from 15 rubles. They will protect against accidental loss or separation from the bumper, but such fasteners will not protect against vandalism. To remove the number from such a mount you don’t even need a screwdriver; you can simply tear it out, and even a physically weak person can do this.
Fasteners are more serious - security bolts, either screw or self-tapping. They are attached to the nuts from inside the bumper. They are already more expensive - from 450 rubles. Here thieves cannot do without pliers, and they will have to spend time, although not very much, about 15 minutes.
Mounting the number on anti-vandal frames. There are many types: plastic and from different metals. Prices start from 1000 rubles. But this will not save your number; if you pull this frame, both it and your number will be removed.
According to experts, reliable fastenings start from 5,000 rubles. These are anti-vandal crayfish made of stronger metal. You can only remove this one together with the bumper or by seriously damaging the car number plate. But thieves will not agree to this, because no one will buy back damaged numbers.
How to restore a car number? Today, you can restore stolen license plates in any region, no matter where the car was registered. But, despite the simplification, both time and money will have to be spent.
You will need to write a statement to the police, use a tow truck to deliver the car to the traffic police for inspection, pay a state fee and pay for a replacement state registration certificate. In total, the driver will pay 5,000-6,000 rubles for a replacement. Thieves demand about the same amount.
As a rule, having paid for the return once, the numbers can be stolen again. Therefore, it is better to install good protection once and forget about the troubles.

Making a metal car license plate holder with your own hands
Since it was not possible to secure the license plate in the plastic license plate holder after it was repaired in the cold, I had to make a new license plate holder with my own hands from scrap material.
There was a suitable sized aluminum plate with a thickness of 2 mm available, and it was decided to make a homemade license plate holder from it. Aluminum is lightweight, durable, easy to process and does not oxidize when exposed to precipitation. Dimensions were taken from the license plate and the drawing presented above was made.
The size of 150 mm was chosen based on the holes in the car bumper made earlier to secure the plastic license plate.
The number holder was cut from the sheet using a hacksaw, the corners were rounded with a flat file with a coarse notch. The holes are drilled using a drill with a metal drill. All that remains is to install the homemade license plate holder on the car bumper and secure the license plate to it with screws.
When attaching the license plate holder to the bumper, a difficulty arose with the screws. Since the license plate must fit tightly to the plane of the license plate, we needed plastic self-tapping screws with a countersunk head, a large thread pitch and so that the threads start at the head itself. Finding such a screw turned out to be problematic, but I remembered that in the computer power supply the cooler in its case is screwed with just such self-tapping screws with a diameter of 4 mm. I unscrewed the screws from the burnt out power supply.
A self-made license plate holder was screwed to the car bumper with self-tapping screws. For more reliable fastening, you can use screws with metric threads, threaded through the bumper, and screwed into nuts with wide washers located on the inside of it.
Although, according to the Requirements for installing state registration plates on vehicles, bolts or screws with heads that have the color of the sign field or light galvanic coatings must be used to secure them, I did not have any screws with beautiful heads on hand that meet these requirements. Therefore, I used it with a dark coating, since the diameter of their heads is only 3 mm larger than the holes in the license plate and at a glance it is practically not noticeable. In any case, the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate employees do not ask questions.
The screws used were M6 with a thread length of 10 mm, with a spherical head for a hex bit. To prevent spontaneous unscrewing of the threaded connection, a spring washer of the “grower” type was installed between the nut and a simple washer.
Now the license plate on the car is secure and looks elegant. I plan to replace the plastic holder for the mount and rear license plate with a homemade one in the near future.
